Domains, Hosting & Going Live

The plumbing that turns your code into a real website.

Overview

Code without a URL is just files on your laptop. This chapter is the bridge from 'localhost' to 'a real address strangers can visit'. You'll understand domains, DNS records, hosting tiers, and how to ship a site without losing money or weekends.

What you'll learn

  • How to pick a domain name that won't embarrass you in 2 years.
  • The 6 DNS record types you'll actually use, with copy-paste examples.
  • When to use static hosting, when to upgrade to a managed platform, and when (almost never) to run your own VPS.
  • Why every site in 2026 should be HTTPS with a CDN — and how to get both for free.

Who this chapter is for

Builders ready to go live. Founders evaluating registrars and hosts. Anyone whose 'dev URL' looks like a Vercel preview link and is too embarrassed to share it.

Registrar
A company licensed to sell domain names (Cloudflare, Namecheap, Porkbun).
A record
DNS entry pointing a domain to an IPv4 address.
CNAME
DNS entry pointing a domain to another domain (used for Vercel, Netlify, etc.).

Try it yourself

Knowledge sticks when you use it. Do at least one of these before moving on.

  1. 01.Buy or transfer a domain to Cloudflare (it sells at cost — usually the cheapest).
  2. 02.Deploy a Hello World page to Vercel and point a subdomain at it via a CNAME record.
  3. 03.Set up SPF + DKIM for your domain so transactional email doesn't land in spam.
